How to grow tomatoes

My favourite thing to grow are tomatoes. They’re incredible, because there’s something really special about how they grow and you have to keep pairing them back and cutting away the outer leave because you want them to grow up and all the energy has got to go into the fruit.

  • Plant in rich, fertile soil or peat-free potting compost, and a good sunny, sheltered spot.
  • Water regularly and feed weekly with a high-potash fertiliser once the plants start to flower. If you’re a beginner gardener bush tomatoes are a good bet as you don’t need to stake them or pinch out growing tips.
  • It’s best to leave tomatoes on their plants so they can ripen naturally, which leads to better flavour.
